Book Review – Peaches & Honey: These Immortal Truths By R. Raeta

Peaches & Honey Blurb

A shapeshifting god,
an immortality granting peach,
and a woman gifted with forever.

England, 1184: Anna is used to hunger and hardship. Ever since she was seventeen, when the pale shadows of her vitiligo were spotted, she has spent more than a decade struggling to survive alone and in exile. Then a single act of kindness towards a beautiful stranger and the taste of a divine peach changes Anna’s life forever.

Suddenly, her body is as untouched by time as it is by harm. As she watches the world change around her, knowing every human connection is only temporary, there is only one person she trusts to always return, no matter the years or distance…

The shapeshifting god who gifted her with immortality.

My Review

I’m going to be honest – I devoured this book! So much so that it is what started my desire to review books on my blog so I could talk about it more. This was my first historical read and I loved it. I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about it. I’ll break down what I liked and didn’t next.

What I Loved About Peaches & Honey

The reality of immortality: I really didn’t mean to make that rhyme. I’ve read a lot of fantasy books where there are immortals or near immortals. I’ve never seen a book highlight the challenges of this, but this book does. I liked that this affected Anna’s motivation and what drove her decisions.

A walk through history: This book starts in 1184 and continues until 1942. It focuses on the realities of history. I may have fallen asleep during history classes during high school, but this book presents history in a way that captures and holds your attention.

It takes place over a long period of time: I liked the fact that this book’s events take place over a long period of time. This makes the things that happen in this book and the way the characters interact believable. Every chapter highlights a new year or decade, and it kept me intrigued to see what Anna would get up to next.

What I Didn’t Love

Emotionally heavy: If you saw the content warnings you know this book features some dark themes. I’m sensitive when it comes to emotionally heavy content so I would have to take breaks to do something else. It comes down to an individual thing, so you may find that this isn’t the case for you. I wish that the book highlighted more positive times in Anna’s life – to break up her negative experiences.

Depth Of Characters: The other thing that would have made this book a 5-star is more depth to the characters and what drives them as people (or gods). Anna is self-sacrificing and always thinks about others – but it would’ve been great to see more of her character and motivation over her long life – what makes her tick personally and how being an immortal shaped/changed her personality.

review of Peaches & Honey

Would I Recommend Peaches & Honey?

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. I urge you to review the trigger warnings and decide whether or not it’s for you. Despite the minor flaws, I still loved this book and the journey it took me on. I completed it about a week ago but I still find myself thinking about it. I’ll definitely read the second and final installment of this series. I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for future books.

Favourite Quotes:

“Perhaps that’s one of the beauties of immortality she overlooked. She could see every inch of the world, and by the time she was done, it would have changed all over again”.

Strange that the god that saved her from the fire would be the same one to keep her from drowning.

I love teaching people everything I’ve learned, but I also love learning from others and their experiences.

I believe homesteading and reading go hand in hand, so my content centers around both.
